It was St. Patrick's Day when our TGLA members visited the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live. Many of our ladies were dressed in festive green.
Trojan Candy arrived very early so that I would be able to take pictures of our members when they arrived. A large group of members arrived first. They carpooled together and were able to park a block away in Lois Booth's condominium parking lot. Back row: Edward Lieb, Judy Lieb, Lois Booth, Mary Hall, Sandy Johnston, Elliott Schwartz. Front row: Mary Indenbaum, Cheryl Schwartz.
My last picture outside the Grammy Museum was a "hurried" picture because everyone was entering the lobby. I took this picture of Marilyn O'Driscoll, Barbara Hance and Jean Ann Holbrook just in time!
Inside the lobby Rita Evans and TGLA President Patricia Dowling smiled for this picture in front of the murals.
Grammy Museum Curator Brian Fuller greeted all of us in the lobby. He told us that the Museum opened its doors in 2008. It is a converted office space consisting of four floors. The Musem is 36,000 square feet in size. Its exhibits exemplify the "marriage between music and technology."
Next our entourage took the escalator up to the second floor Clive Davis Theater. Inside, current USC graduate student Nnaka Onwusa introduced herself. She is attending the Sol Price Graduate School and is working on an Executive Masters in Leadership. Nnaka earned her B.S. in Sociology at U.C. Riverside. She taught in Education first and then started working in the Grammy Museum Box Office next. Nnaka will attain her Executive Masters from USC in 2017. Congratulations Nnaka and FIGHT ON!
Nnaka told us that the Clive Davis Theater is a 200 seat auditorium. Live concerts, as well as film screenings, are performed in the Theater for Grammy Museum members. In 2009 the Grammy Museum became a "pilgrimage sight" for Michael Jackson mourners. Nnake related to us that Michael Jackson had thanked her, as a Curator, for keeping his legend alive just a few months before he passed away.
Our two TGLA Special Event Chairs posed with Curators Brian Fuller and Nnaka Onwusa.
Next, President Patricia Dowling and our Ways and Means Committee gave Nnaka a beautiful cardinal and gold scarf to thank her for her presentation. Patricia Dowling, Kate Farlow, Nnaka Onwusa, Barbara Hance, Sandy Johnston, and Terri Boyle.
Now it was time to begin our self-guided tours. Trojan Candy took a few pictures of the Grammy Museum.
What an exciting Grammy Museum Tour.
FIGHT ON, TGLA!
On Wednesday, March 9th, four TGLA members---Nikki Dana, Mary Anne Cogbill, Jean Getchell and Sandy Johnston---posed for this picture outside Widney House. They had just finished interviewing USC Juniors, who were trying to be awarded one of our TGLA Scholarships. Nice work, ladies!
Then, on Saturday, March 12th, our TGLA ladies were again busy volunteering. It was the USC Alumni Day of SCervice. Our ladies arrived at the Tutor Center Ballroom at 9:00 am to set up for the Town and Gown bead making workshop. Our ladies are members of both TGLA and Town and Gown.
Next, I went back into the ballroom and took pictures of TGLA members setting up for the USC Alumni Day of SCervice.
D'Arcy McLeod sent Trojan Candy this beautiful picture of the TGLA volunteers and attendees at the conclusion of the USC Alumni Day of SCervice. Thank you, D'Arcy!
FIGHT ON, TGLA!
Trojan Candy invited my Delta Phi Kappa pledge sister Ann Kubota to the February TGLA general meeting. There were two guest speakers. They were Dean of the Rossier School of Education Karen Symms Gallagher and CEO of Ednovate Oliver Sicat.
After Ann and I found a seat, Rosalee Pechersky took this picture of Ann and me. Thanks, Rosalee!
Christine Ofiesh invited eleven of her Town and Gown friends to our meeting. (front row seated l-r: Susie Rhodes, Debra Bradley, Shiela Derrig, Ruberta Weaver; back row standing l-r: Carol Wright, Colleen Crowley, Suzie Wheeler, TGLA member Terri Boyle, L'Cena Rice, Christine Ofiesh, Dianne Kaub, Kathy Lingle, Linda Givvin)
Vice-Presidents Membership Sandi Hampar and Sharon Schmidt introduced our two new members. Sharon Wood and Claire Slaught received a rose and their directories. The four ladies posed for this picture. (Sandi Hampar, Sharon Wood, Claire Slaught and Sharon Schmidt) Welcome, Sharon! Welcome, Claire!
President Patricia Dowling took a short break before our two speakers. Trojan Candy was able to take a picture of speaker Oliver Sicat, Carol Fox, Rachel Beal of the Rossier School of Education, Dean Karen Symms Gallagher and Vice-President Programs Christine Ofiesh.
When the meeting resumed, Dean Gallagher spoke first. She said that "Education is the great equalizer." The Rossier School of Education intends to improve learning in Urban Education locally, nationally and globally. Next, she showed a video about "Ednovate." There are three purposes to Ednovate. The first is to "Educate Emerging Leaders." USC will prepare emerging teachers to have long careers in education. The second purpose is to "Investigate to Advance." USC will create positive intergenerational change in education. The third purpose is to "Engage the Field." USC intends to inspire learning in the field. Quite a motivational presentation.
Our next speaker, Oliver Sicat told us that he is a "first generation college student," just like Dean Gallagher. He is also a Trojan! Oliver is the Principal of the USC Hybrid High School that was created in 2012. Principal Sicat explained four purposes of the Hybrid High School. First, the high school will personalize learning and connect learning to the real world. Second, the students will give back to the community. Third, the High School will cooperate with other districts and will create positive multigenerational change. Last, the high school will influence national policy. He told us that there are two USC Hybrid High Schools operating now: One is in downtown Los Angeles and the other is in Lincoln Heights. There will be more schools built. What innovative ideas!
Trojan Candy took this picture of the two speakers, Christine Ofiesh and TGLA President Patricia Dowling.
There were many questions from the members that were addressed by Dean Gallagher and Oliver. Many of our TGLA members are teachers or retired teachers. Quite a good question and answer session. Then, a delicious lunch was served.
Another informative TGLA general meeting.
