Saturday, December 27, 2014---The Holiday Bowl
Friend and fellow USC alumnus Genaro Carapia drove his wife Lai-Tan, my sister Pat, my brother-in-law Dudley and me to San Diego in the morning. We arrived at the trolley station at noon and at the Qualcomm Stadium, where the USC Alumni Tailgate was located at 12:30 p.m.
Here is the trolley we rode.
This is the tailgate sign that was put up by four friends---Julian Bonse, Adam Bart, Ron Orr and Scott Jacobson.
As we were waiting for the tailgate to open, friend and fellow TGLA member, Sandy Johnston, came over to give us a hug and say, "Hi."
Sandy introduced me to nine Spirit of Troy band boosters.
Jerry Ensom, Lorrie Burnett, Sandy Johnston, and Dave Martin
Mary Haltom, Louie and Mary Jo Wong, Jack and Rita Rothberg, and Sue Cimbaluk
Once inside, we went directly to our table and then to get our food. Here are the friends at our table. Dudley and Pat Poon, Lai Tan and Genaro Carapia, and Raymond and Eiko Bates (standing)
We met three new USC alumni friends at out table---Jenna Lohara (Business '95), Sonia Batra (Poli Sci '96), and Sohail Malad (Business'96).
Trojan Candy walked around the tailgate area looking for more friends. At a nearby table were friend Richard Flores, his family and friends---Brian Tilton, Alexandra Flores, Rebecca Flores, Marciano Flores, Ginny Simpson, Dominick Flores, Richard Flores, John Simpson, and, in front, Teresa Flores.
Fellow TGLA member Rita Evans walked by with her husband David.
Then, as I was walking, someone called out my name. It was Karen and Mark Tanimura and Grant Nichol.
On the other end of the tailgate, I found another TGLA friend, D'Arcy and her husband David McLeod.
Then, everyone heard the band. Trojan Candy walked to the other end of the tailgate to get a picture. I saw friend and Assistant Band Director Tony Fox.
The Spirit of Troy played an enthusiastic concert under Dr. Bartner's direction. Then they marched out.
We walked over to the stadium. On the way, friend Michael Donavan III posed for this picture with Pat.
The inside of the stadium was abuzz with activity. Here is the colorful Qualcomm Stadium scoreboard.
Across the aisle in the stands, friend Sunny Shepherd asked me to take a picture of her and Omar Nazel (4/13/2013).
At halftime, our team led 24-17. There was a half-time extravaganza with fireworks.
We led 45-27 in the third quarter. Nelson Agholar knocked down the Nebraska Hail Mary pass on the last play to seal the victory, 45-42.
In the post game ceremony, Leonard Williams was named the "Defensive Player" of the game, and Cody Kessler was named the "Offensive Player" of the game. Cody then announced that he was coming back next year!
Trojan Candy took videos of USC football players leading the band in Conquest. CLICK on each thumbnail to see the video.
Adoree' Jackson was first.
Leonard Williams led the band for probably the last time.
